Topic Summary: Monitoring CRISPR

CRISPR, the breakthrough gene editing tool, has opened up the possibility of treating genetic diseases and has encouraged scientists to work on developing safer, precise gene editing tools.

Since the announcement of CRISPR in 2012, the said technology has gained both positive and antagonistic attention. As is the case with any scientific discovery, speculations were made and certain facts were exaggerated.

In this committee, delegates will mainly discuss the various applications of CRISPR and the bioethical implications of these applications. Delegates will also discuss methods of better informing the public and the media of advancements in genetic engineering.

Director’s Letter

Dear Delegates, Welcome to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization!
My name is Misato Koganei, and I am thrilled to be your director at JMMUN 2022.
I’ve been a part of the MUN club at Senzoku for about five years, and I was involved in last year’s JMMUN as well. I’m also a part of several student-run volunteer groups outside of school.
I am so excited to meet the delegates of the UNESCO committee! If you have any questions or inquiries, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,

Misato

I am very excited to chair for this conference this year!
The controversy over the ethics and usage of CRISPR and other gene editing technology is a diffucult question to answer, but I hope that all delegates can come up with a unique solution of their own!
Sincerely,

Mei
