Topic Summary: Discussing Extremism and the Use of Unconventional Weapons

As modern warfare has changed form from being issues of individual countries to conflicts within multiple states, the UN is required to achieve international disarmament through maintaining global peace and security. Delegates must keep in mind that extremism does not necessarily occur within a single state and can occur from extremists across borders. In addition, the Security Council must overcome the problem of the veto power, to authorize intervention and the usage of force when necessary.

In DISEC of JMMUN 2022, delegates will discuss extremism and the use of unconventional weapons on an international scale and cooperate in improving the Responsibility to Protect to protect all people equally. Through debate and draft resolution processes, this committee will discuss actions the international community must take to help countries currently under mass atrocity crimes and avoid all extremism and the use of unconventional weapons before occurring.

Director’s Letter

Dear Delegates, Welcome to the Disarmament and International Security Committee! My name is Marina Takahashi and I am delighted to be your director for JMMUN 2022. I am a second-year student at Senzoku Gakuen Senior High School and currently live in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. I have also lived in Greenwich, Connecticut for 6 years where I spent most of my Elementary School years.
Being part of a diverse community from a young age, I have always felt a strong connection to international problems from communicating with friends of various backgrounds. I joined the Senzoku Gakuen MUN Club 5 years ago, and currently am the vice-president of the club. MUN has helped me gain confidence, strengthen research skills, and expand my perspective of the world. I hope the delegates are able to gain and strengthen these skills through participating in JMMUN. I also feel that MUN is a chance to interact with new people world-wide. Currently, especially since it is difficult meet new people due to the pandemic, the conference will be a great chance to make new friends! This committee will be “Discussing Extremism and the Use of Unconventional Weapons.” As a lover of world history, I am very excited about this topic because research on past wars, terror attacks, demonstrations and many other forms of extremism and the usage of unconventional weapons is essential. Although we will be discussing over a rather difficult topic, I want to tell delegates to be confident!

Everyone must speak up, for no one delegation will have a solution to everything and collaboration is necessary. At the same time, I expect everyone to always show respect to the people you will be debating about and the people you will be debating with. While preparation and committee sessions may be overwhelming at times, your experience at JMMUN will most certainly be a meaningful one. I hope to learn a lot from you and am truly excited to meet delegates from all over the world at JMMUN 2022! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or anything else.
Sincerely,

Marina

Director,

Disarmament and International Security

Hi. My name is Aoi Nakata and I’m in the debate and MUN club at school. I was supposed to participate in HMUN and several other mun conferences, but due to COVID-19 and recently, the Omicron, it has been canceled. I am sure we can enjoy this conference, defying the strict restrictions that COVID-19 has presented our lives with. I look forward to the conference!
Regards,

Aoi

My participation in MUN stems from my curiosity after being invited. People say that curiosity killed the cat, and I’m starting to believe that’s true, since there are a lot of things needed to be done, but it’s still fun, so I’m not fully regretting me being curious.
Sincerely,

Saika
